Our rector, Prof. Dr. Oral Erdoğan, visited Mr. Behçet Tuğlan, the doyen of Turkish Naval Architecture, in his home.
Mr. Gürsel Yıldız, the secretary general of the Chamber of Turkish Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, participated in the visit, too. Topics such as the development of naval architecture industry in Turkey throughout history were dealt with. Prof. Dr. Oral Erdoğan told Mr. Tuğlan the maritime community has been making use of his wide experiences and this would go on the same way in the future. He thanked him for the contributions he has made to maritime sector and training and education.
Who is Behçet Tuğlan?
He was born in Eskişehir in 1930. He completed his primary and secondary education in Eskişehir. He graduated with a Masters of Science degree from the engineering faculty, department of naval architecture, as a naval architect. He served as an ensign in Gölcük Shipyard in the Naval Forces. After the completion of his military service, he started working as the first civilian engineer with MSc in Gölcük Shipyard. He worked in dockyards of Avondale Marine Ways in New Orleans, and Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Co. in Mobile, Alabama between the years 1957-1962. He started working in the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in 1962. He returned to Turkey in 1963 and started to work in ABS Istanbul. He was in Singapore between the years 1979-1981. In 1989, he became the director in ABS Istanbul and retired from that company in 1997. He is married with 2 children. He was presented with a memento as a Golden Graduate on the 50th anniversary of his graduation at the graduation ceremony at ITU on 21 May, 2003.
